Circular Economy
Essex Furukawa looks at a circular economy as an economic system that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. We feel that aligning the pillars of our Vision will naturally create this system that improves the life cycle of our products, contributes to our carbon reduction goals, and aligns with our customer values.
Plastic Pallets
Essex Furukawa is moving forward with an initiative to replace traditional wooden pallets with eco-friendly plastic alternatives. The initiative was launched at the Kameyama, Japan plant in 2022 and it is expected that all wooden pallets will be replaced at the plant by 2026.
This transition aligns with our Vision 2030 commitment to environmental responsibility as well as contributes to a global effort of establishing a Circular Economy.

Recycled Copper
Essex Furukawa is currently sourcing 25% of our copper supply in North America from recycled sources thanks to partnerships with key suppliers.
We internally recycle all excess copper from magnet wire production at our North American plants at our Metals Processing Center. We have similar operations in place at locations around the globe in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint.

Greening Phenolic Production
Essex Furukawa has reworked the process used to produce our phenolic resin intermediate. The resulting benefits are reduced environmental impact while also reducing the quantity of chemical types needed.
Looking at formulaic composition through each step of our supply chain is another example of the commitment made to sustainability.

Packaging Changes
The changes that are being made from a packaging and production standpoint can be measured in positive changes in the reduction of plastics, reduction of carbon emissions, and increases in reuse opportunities. The combined effect of all three, factored in with an evolved understanding of a complete life cycle, leads to better decision making in creating a Circular Economy.
Package and Reel Recycling
Essex Furukawa takes special care to ensure the seamless delivery of magnet wire to our customers’ manufacturing floors. As a sustainability minded business, the packaging used to deliver our products is made from up to 30% recycled materials. We also strive to fine-tune the resource cycle through the removal of empty pallets, reels and spools. These packages and their pallets remain the property of Essex Furukawa and are fully recyclable via the Packaging Return Program in North America and similar programs in other regions.
