In the face of an ongoing battle to make electric vehicles more affordable and attractive to potential buyers, Tesla has taken a big step towards both, by making charging free for Model S and Model X buyers.
Announced in a tweet — with no press release or explanation — the company simply released the information and let the internet do the rest.
“BREAKING: All new Model S and Model X orders now come with free unlimited Supercharging.”
Well then.
The Model S is currently listed with two initial price points: $72,615 for long range and $92,615 for the performances package.
The Model X is also listed with two prices: $77,815 for long range and $97,815 for performance.
According to its website, all cars have Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, adaptive air suspension, premium interior and sound. Tesla All-Wheel Drive has two independent motors that digitally control torque to the front and rear wheels—for far better handling and traction control. Your car can drive on either motor, so you never need to worry about getting stuck on the road.
Tesla proclaims that the Model S was ‘designed for speed and endurance—with incredible aerodynamics, ludicrous performance and uncompromised aesthetics. Automatic door handles auto-present upon approach and withdraw when closed’.
While Model X is marketed as the safest SUV ever, being ‘built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, the body, chassis, restraints and battery technology provide a very low probability of occupant injury’.
The Tesla announcement was met with mixed results to the already 4,000-plus comments on Twitter, most of which were asking to extend the offer to recent buyers of the two cars and not just to entice new buyers.
It also was just a few days ago that Harley Davidson offered a similar promotion with two-years free charging to those who purchased its LiveWire e-motorcylce.
