Mack Trucks is set to literally clean up the streets of New York City with its Mack® LR battery electric vehicle (BEV).
Debuted at WasteExpo 2019, the fully electric garbage truck will begin real-world operation in 2020 by working with the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY).
Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president, North American sales and marketing said that the product was the next level of innovation for the brand.

The DSNY is one of the largest sanitation departments in the world as well as one of the largest customers for Mack. It collects more than 12,000 tons of refuse and recyclables each day. The DSNY has worked to reduce waste to landfill and its partnership with this Mack EV will aid in cutting emissions.
“New York City, and DSNY in particular, is a world leader when it comes to testing the latest technologies to help us reduce our environmental footprint,” said New York City DSNY Deputy Commissioner Rocky DiRico. “We’re proud to be the first Mack customer to test this exciting new technology, and we look forward to continuing to work with Mack throughout this project.”
According to a press release, the Mack LR BEV is powered by a patented ,integrated electric powertrain that has two 130-kW motors which can produce a combined 496 peak horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of torque. The power is sent through a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and “put to the ground by Mack’s proprietary S522R 52,000-lb. rear axles.”
The Mack LR BEV will replace its traditional silver bulldog hood ornament with a copper-colored version, signifying that it’s an electric vehicle.
The release continued that all of the LR BEV’s accessories, including the hydraulic systems for the Heil DuraPack 5000 body, are electrically driven through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. Four NMC lithium-ion batteries (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) are charged via a 150kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system.
Infrastructure and charging challenges have been mitigated for the DSNY due to the fact that the refuse and recycling collections are on predetermined routes and distances, as well as that the vehicles are returned to a central location at the end of each day. Additionally the frequent braking opportunities will provide thousands of regeneration opportunities to limit any loss of charge.
